2019: Ladies, don’t set a New Year's Resolution, Set a Decade Plan
Stop planning small
“Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”
Bill Gates
Our views of time are so limited. It makes sense though, after college no one is holding our hands telling us that if we create life milestones, we’ll have a holistic version of ourselves. Which is why I love this new idea of planning your decades. As a future financial planner, it’s no shock that I’m a big fan of this concept. But how does one start write out a plan for ten years?
That’s a good question: Everyone can start in 2019 and have a plan until 2028. It’s a simple as that. Taking out a sheet of paper, a Google Document, journal and write out a list of things you want to do.
Now let’s go back into the Gates quote:
Most people overestimate what they can do in a year
This is probably the truest statement and problem with my people...You know millennials. We have this TV show mentality that things can happen in a year. It’s one my down falls. I’ll write a huge list of things to do before I 30, as if I’m going to die at thirty.
Like New Year’s Resolutions we don’t acknowledge that we have so many years, and yes Tim McGraw said we should live like we’re dying, but are we tho?
I set up some themes about the next ten years:
Draft of Eugenie Decade Plan
30-35 Learn Dat Money
My life is now dedicated to learning more about money. Since I’ve turned thirty, I’ve paid off my undergraduate student loans, by not getting any sleep. I am finishing up my MBA in March and headed off into the journey of Certified Financial Planning. Into the belly of the male dominated FinTech world. I want to create a FinTech Company for Women of Color. I have no clue the specifics, but I’ll keep everyone posted once I write it out
35-40 2023 Year of Creativity
I’m a big fan of art, language, music and dance, but I don’t think anyone knows that. I’m not the artsy looking person. I’ve dedicated that portion of my life to learning a language, taking an improve class, and reading... Gasp... Fiction Again, no specifics, but the theme is there.
Write stuff down anything down...
