Have you every wanted to speak your truth in front of people but are too scared? Do you think about how you never hear people talking about what you’re passionate about? The Breakthrough Speaker is an informative book and what a perfect money book club to read in 2019. The book is packed with information that would leave you inspired but practical tips throughout each chapter. In this blog post, I highlighted the one’s that I resonated with because reading the book is transformative.

Play the long game

It was so refreshing to hear that everyone goes through the struggle of starting a business. I’m embarking my third year as a business owner and one full year as an LLC. It takes time, for a while I thought I wanted to be in the Breakthrough Quarter Life Crisis, achieve your dream crew but then realized that wait, I’m the worst person to do that. That’s not my style at all. Workplace engagement was only cool for me when I talked about numbers. Hence why I moved in financial planning.

It took me two years to realize that I was doing something completely wrong, which is why I wasn’t making any money. And losing all of mine. You maybe feeling that way too. Listen, Smiley is on the money, anything that you believe in takes times.

Your Network is Your Net Worth

As cheesy as this saying is true, it is 100% accurate. Smiley consistently talks about putting yourself out there, aligning yourself with the right people to represent what you stand for. It is important to write down a group of people that you think is doing the good work that you’re fighting for.

For example: I highlight women of color and I want them to have access to financial planning. On the one hand I listen to all the Women of Color podcast, but I need to get in front of the people that are the decision makers. I am in Smiley’s Facebook Group for People of Color/Women and I actively work with the Financial Planning Association, just trying to get my foot in the door.

Why?

The ultimate goal is to start a Fintech ( Financial Technology) company that provides financial planning for women of color. I need to be in the know of my target audience, but I still have to crunch those numbers y’all.

Write a Book that Matters

Everyone has a story of that can help one person. Writing a book is a lot of work, but worth it. When people heard that I was crying and eating a whole box of Oreos, because I wanted to make a book that I can stand by people thought I was crazy. Smiley’s book reassured me that this speaking my truth will lead to more positive things in the long road.
